Why Wellfleet is the Best Place on Cape Cod:

Things to do: Some of the best kayaking on Cape Cod, swimming in Wellfleet's pristine kettle ponds, Wellfleet's magnificent ocean beaches, clamming, Wellfleet's world famous oysters, the village of Wellfleet - groceries, ice cream, Hatch's fresh produce, fresh fish, blueberry pancakes for breakfast at the Lighthouse,  art galleries, restaurants,  walk down the beach to the left, it's 25 minutes to Wellfleet Pier, get some burgers, fried clams and ice cream sit at the picnic tables by the water, go to the farmer's market and get organically grown produce. Deep water fishing in Wellfleet Harbor with the Naviator- they have the rods & reels & they'll clean the fish for you,  world famous Wellfleet oysters in all the restaurants - love'em,  learn to shuck'em.  Fish off the pier, play tennis on a clay court,  there's a railroad bike trail in Wellfleet & bike trails in Provincetown, bike rentals in Wellfleet, the Wellfleet drive-in, Wellfleet indoor movie theatre,  go to a show at  Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre  (Voted Best of Boston  - Boston Magazine).  See paintings of renowned artists in Wellfleet's thriving art galleries,  go sightseeing in Provincetown or night-time entertainment,  walk down the beach to the right about 20 minutes to see the sunset,  take sailing lessons, rent a sailboat,  seaside golfing down the road at Chequessett Yacht & Country Club,  grill on the Little Neck deck overlooking the water or dine al fresco at Town pizza, the Wicked Oyster, Bookstore or Winslow's Tavern. All the  restaurants serve fresh, local sea food. Explore Great Island,  take a walk on Uncle Tim's bridge, go out for lobster, all the restaurants are child friendly. Call Mac's at the Pier and order lobsters, fresh local seafood, they'll cook them for you for free and you pick up.

More Things to do: Marconi site where Marconi invented wireless, visit the Highland Light Lighthouse in Truro, Audubon Society Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary - what a great place!  Go on a whale watch in nearby Provincetown, stroll around 'P-town' and pick a restaurant, lots of little shops. The seashore has beautiful sunsets,  scenic drives, learn to surf,  go birding, or don't go anywhere - just listen to the birds sing. From the Little Neck it's about 30 steps - 30 seconds walk to the beach - kayak, swim, or walk to Great Island at low tide, explore Cape Cod National Seashore, try to make it to Jeremy Point (lotion up), collect sea shells, watch the oystermen tend to their oysters, relax, let the kids have fun collecting & exploring.  At night rent a movie, read a book,  begin writing your book, listen to the waves, watch the moon over the water, the salty sea air is wonderful, sleep will be restful.

Ocean beach - Henry David Thoreau called the sandy stretch along Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown "The Great Beach."  Towering cliffs carved into sand dunes, called scarps, overlook the beaches of fine sand along the Atlantic Ocean side. The 40-mile uninterrupted stretch of beach is the largest on the East Coast. There is also walking and biking trails, marshes, fresh and salt-water ponds, forests, historic structures, and lighthouses.  In all, the federally protected land includes more than 43,000 acres. The ocean beach with it's bigger waves is  5 miles from Little Neck.

Marconi Station Site - Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi set up shop on the high cliffs overlooking what is now Marconi Beach in Wellfleet in the early 1900s to work on his project of sending wireless transmissions across the Atlantic. While repairs were being made to the Wellfleet station, Marconi sent a transmission across the seas from a station in Nova Scotia. In 1903, Marconi sent historic messages back and forth from the U.S. President and the King of England from Wellfleet. Today, a model of the station sits at the original site.

Great Island - A Wellfleet treasure. Great Island was a center of mariner activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, a walking trail winds around between sand dunes, salt marshes and the sea.  You can kayak to this protected ecosystem in about 15 minutes from the Little Neck. There are no houses there.  Swimmers: Swim to Great Island!   Walkers: walk there at low tide.   It's pristine and secluded.

Wellfleet:   Authentic character and charm about 75 miles out into the Atlantic ocean.  About half of Wellfleet is preserved as part of the Cape Cod National Seashore. There's a unique nautical history dating to the 1700's, a quaint central village, and a plentiful supply of fresh fish and shellfish, including the world famous Wellfleet oyster. The public beaches - ocean, bay, and pond - are beautiful and not crowded like other parts of Cape Cod.
